Health & Life Skills - Triple Play Program
A Game Plan for the Mind, Body and Soul
Triple Play Program - A Game Plan for the Mind, Body and Soul
Triple Play, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company and the WellPoint Foundation,  is a dynamic wellness program currently offered in Boys & Girls Clubs that demonstrates how eating right, keeping fit and forming positive relationships add up to a healthy lifestyle. The goal of the Triple Play program is to improve Club members’ knowledge of healthy habits; increase the number of hours per day they participate in physical activities; and strengthen their ability to interact positively with others and engage in positive relationships.
Triple Play Parents Game Plan
We all have a role in making sure our young people adopt lifelong, healthy lifestyles that include vigorous physical activity and a balanced diet. Because parents play such a critical role in the development of a child’s physical and social well-being, BGCA and Coca-Cola wanted to give them a tool that could be used at home – where healthy habits start, are modeled and reinforced. The Triple Play Parents Game Plan offers a holistic approach with three key areas of focus:
  • Mind: Develops a knowledge base for young people to acquire healthy habits, such as making smart food choices, understanding appropriate portion sizes and creating fun and balanced meals.
  • Body: Promotes young people becoming more physically active through fun daily fitness, including activities to get kids active and moving.
  • Soul: Strengthens interpersonal skills, positive behavior and good character through social recreation programs and activities.
Program Development

Triple Play is supported by a combined five-year, multi-million dollar commitment from The Coca-Cola Company and is the largest wellness endeavor ever undertaken by Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Both partners are committed to youth wellness initiatives and felt it was important to work together as a team to help youth build skills for maintaining physical fitness and making positive lifestyle changes. By teaching young people the importance of developing healthy and active lifestyles, Boys & Girls Clubs, through the Triple Play program, can help make a difference.

The Triple Play program was created by a team of experts at Boys & Girls Clubs of America. During the development phase, we also sought the advice and counsel of leading health, medical, nutrition and physical fitness experts. The nutrition component of the program was developed in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
Exposure

Triple Play is currently available to some 4,000 Boys & Girls Clubs serving over 4.2 million youth in the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, plus domestic and international U.S. military installations. Since the program’s launch in 2005, Clubs across the country have seen encouraging lifestyle changes in their members.
Triple Play Program Components
MIND: This approach incorporates healthy living and active learning in every part of the Boys & Girls Club experience, from the gym to the learning center to the arts and crafts room. The central themes of good nutrition, regular health care and improving overall well-being are emphasized. A curriculum called "Healthy Habits" guides this portion of Triple Play and was developed in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

BODY: This component boosts Club members' physical activities to a higher level by providing sports and fitness activities for all youth – boys and girls, those athletically gifted and those talented in other areas. Daily fitness challenges, also developed in collaboration with Health & Human Services, give youth at every age the chance to play longer and harder at a variety games.

SOUL: By participating in this comprehensive social recreation program, Club youth will be able to develop and sustain positive relationships with others, acquire a healthy self-concept and a strong belief in their own self-worth and cope well with positive and adverse situations.
